Bertha Flores

April 9, 1942 — January 27, 2021

Bertha Teniente Flores, age 78, of San Antonio, passed away in the early afternoon hours of Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at Baptist Medical Center, after a brief illness.  Bertha was born on April 9, 1942 in San Antonio to the late Ignacio and Blanca Mendoza Teniente.  Bertha, one of five children, loved to dance and play jokes.  She was always fun to be around, even if she was more reserved than her siblings.

In her early adult years, Bertha attended beautician school and worked as a hairstylist for a few years and then worked for Sam’s Club for more than 20 years before becoming a full-time mother of five children of her own.  Bertha was a loving mother and homemaker who grew into a master chef with a flare for dancing in the kitchen to her favorite Tejano and Mariachi playing in the background.  Bertha was a lifetime member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church where she served as a religious education teacher in the “CCD”.

As life progressed, Bertha found a love of travelling, especially on cruises and to destinations like Hawaii and Vegas.  When she was closer to home, she enjoyed gambling at Kickapoo in Eagle Pass.  As Bertha became a grandmother, nothing else in life seemed to matter – her grandchildren were her life.  Bertha leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication that will live on in the hearts of those she knew and loved for generations to come.

Bertha is survived by her husband Rudolpho “Rudy” Flores, whom she wed in 2009, walking out to the song “At Last” – in reference to the amount of time it took her sweet husband to marry her.  She is also survived by her children, James Valdez, of San Antonio, Grace Martinez, and husband Phillip, of McAllen, Maricella Charles, and husband Art, Lisa Hinajosa, and Sandra Torees, and husband, Samuel, all of San Antonio; siblings, Petra “Pat” Teniente, Theresa Moen, and husband Roger, and Javier Teniente; and by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and very special friends.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ignacio “Nacho” Teniente.
