Frances Platzer

August 24, 1934 — September 18, 2020

Frances Ann Platzer, age 86, of Windcrest, passed away in the late afternoon hours of Friday, September 18, 2020 at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, surrounded by her family.  Frances was born on August 24, 1934 in Jefferson County, Texas to the late Joseph Louis and Aline Mary (DeKerlegand) Gallier.  Frances grew up in Beaumont, Texas as one of four siblings in a devout Catholic family.  They grew up in a time where life wasn’t always easy, but by faith and family Frances learned many of the traits she carried through her entire life.  She graduated from St. Anthony High School in Beaumont in 1953 and went on to attend college at Pan American University in Edinburg.

While working at the bookstore at Lamar University, Frances met a young man who quickly took attention to her, as she did him.  Frances and her young beau quickly began a love affair that would span nearly 60 years officially beginning as one on December 26, 1963 at Assumption Catholic Church in Beaumont, where Frances married Willard Bruce Platzer.  Bill and Fran began a life together that saw the beginning of a new life for Fran and her young son, the births of two more children, miles and miles of memories and stories that will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Fran went on to a career in the registrar’s office at Pan American University and later as manager of the Central Campus Store.  After moving to San Antonio, Fran worked in the registrar’s office at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Fran was a faithful member of the parish at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in San Antonio.  Those who will remember Fran, as she was affectionately known, will always remember a woman who was kind, loving and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She enjoyed reading and working Sudoku puzzles, crocheting, sewing and researching new recipes, but no recipe was ever more beloved than her famous chili recipe.  Most will remember Fran as a die-hard Spurs fan.  Many of Fran’s favorite memories were centered around her beloved family and none more special than the walks with her grandchildren to the duck pond.  Fran leaves behind a legacy that will live on for generations to come.

Frances is survived by her loving husband, Willard Bruce “Bill” Platzer; children, James Christopher Cropper, and wife Marcela, of Fort Worth, David Bruce Platzer, and wife Luz, of San Antonio, and Susan Marie Thompson, and husband Ken, of Denham Springs, Louisiana; grandchildren, James Wilson, K.C. Thompson, and wife Lauren, Kaitlyn Thompson, Jason Thompson, Nicole Platzer, and Noah Platzer; siblings, Earlene Tullier, and husband Joseph “Cal,” of Nederland, Texas and Helen  Sohlinger of Beaumont; and by a host of other relatives and very special friends.

Frances was preceded in death by her first husband, Ferdy Cropper, and by one brother, Joseph Louis “Sonny” Gallier, Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church with Father Thumma Prathat officiating.  Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with David Platzer, Ken Thompson, K.C. Thompson, Noah Platzer, Kaitlyn Thompson and Nicole Platzer serving as pallbearers.  The Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 12:30 P.M., at the church.
