Maria Rosario Salinas

August 23, 1947 ~ November 15, 2020 (age 73)

Obituary

Maria Rosario Salinas passed away peacefully with all four daughters by her side on Sunday
afternoon November 15th, 2020. Rosario was born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas on August 23rd,
1947. She was the youngest of five children and was proud to have been raised in Monterrey,
Nuevo Leon. She was an avid tennis player growing up and graduated college with a
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She worked at Industrias del Vidrio for several years before
marriage to Jose Jaime Salinas in 1972. The following year, the newly-weds moved to
Chicago, Illinois where her husband was re-located for work. Together they had four
daughters.
In the early 1980’s, Rosario found herself as a single mother, in a country’s culture she was not
familiar with, and a language she did not speak. After moving around to five different cities
with four little girls under the age of 7, she grounded her roots in McAllen, Texas to raise them.
Rosario worked different occupations to make ends meet while she learned to speak English.
With her infectious personality and her innate ability to strike up a conversation with anyone,
she found her calling as a greeter and cashier at Wal-Mart; where she earned the Sam Walton
Award for Excellence for four years. In 1996, Rosario moved to San Antonio to be closer to her
daughters. It was there where she started her career at Target. She worked there until 2006,
until her most important role of life began; being a grandmother.
If you ever had a conversation with Rosario, by the end of it you were aware of her proudest
achievements: raising four daughters on her own, never re-marrying, becoming a United
States citizen, and having six beautiful grandsons.
In the Fall of 2017, Rosario was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her daughters and son-in-laws
took care of her in her final years, making sure she never missed a soccer game, took her to
listen to live music, enjoyed walks at the Arboretum, and ate at her favorite restaurant Chili’s.
Rosario is survived by her daughters Rosario Valdez, and her husband Arturo, Erika Stayer, and
her husband Jason, Marzella Zielke, and her husband Daryl, Jamie Salinas, and her six
grandsons, Diego, Enrique, Jacob, Seth, Carlos, and Michael. Her brother Gilberto Ramos,
and her sisters Rita Ramos and Cecilia Rodriguez, as well as numerous nephews and nieces she
loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Jose and Celedonia
Ramos, her oldest sister Alicia Ramos and Alicia’s son Martin Ramos.

A memorial service will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home at 10:00am will an inurnment to follow at the Mausoleum in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
