Melissa Thomas

July 20, 1974 — May 4, 2019

Melissa Ann Thomas, age 44, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2019 surrounded by her family.  Melissa was the second daughter born to Ronnie and Mary Kay Thomas on Saturday, July 20, 1974 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Melissa lived in Las Vegas, Nevada; Torrance, California; Arcadia, California; and Lubbock, Texas before settling for the remainder of her life in San Antonio, Texas.  She graduated from Judson High School in 1993.  Melissa attended the National Institute of Technology and graduated with a Medical Assistant Certification on June 9, 1997.  She was able to put her certification to use at her first placement at Northeast Methodist Hospital and other nursing facilities.  Melissa married Jim Huff on February 14, 2000.  Although the marriage did not last, their friendship did and they remained friends up until her death.  As of 2012, her health started declining.  In 2014, she had a heart attack which resulted in a triple bypass surgery.  This combined with major diabetic issues, meant that she was no longer able to work.  She did, however, volunteer at the Universal City Library due to her love of reading and working with people.

Melissa is survived by her parents, Ronnie and Mary Kay Thomas, her sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Randy Randolph, her niece, Katelyn Randolph and her nephew, Matthew Randolph, her aunts: Patty Rubin, Mary Olive, Shari Hindman, Becky Thomas, Pam Thomas, her uncles: David Olive, Kenneth “Pete” Thomas, Jimmie Thomas, and her loving cousins: Todd Thomas, Erika King, Michelle Rubin Olive, Roberto “Tito” Rubin, Kathleen Rubin, Michael Rubin, Chris Olive, Erica Olive Shirk, Dakota Hindman, and Jesse Hindman.

Melissa was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Earl “Bud” Olive and Catherine “Kay” Olive, her paternal grandparents, Earl C. Thomas and Sarece Thomas, her uncle, Roberto Rubin, her aunt, Marsha Thomas, her uncle, Tommy Thomas, her cousin, Danny Thomas and her beloved “furbaby,” Revaly.

There will be a funeral mass on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:00 am on Randolph AFB at Chapel 1.  Family and friends will gather afterward at the clubhouse of Oakcrest Pointe Mobile Home Park from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.   There will be no burial due to Melissa’s wish to be cremated.  Another of Melissa’s wishes was to be an organ donor.  She donated her liver to an individual in San Antonio and various tissues which enabled her to touch over 40 lives with her final gift.  A flag was flown in her honor over Northeast Methodist Hospital from May 10-12, 2019.   In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for a donation to be made in Melissa’s name to either the Humane Society of San Antonio or the Diabetes Association.

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.
