Wendy Edwards

March 28, 1943 — February 22, 2021

Wendy Winifred Edwards, of Converse, entered into her soulful rest on Monday, February 22, 2021 at the tender age of 77. She was born in Bridgefoot Bawburgh, Norwich, England on March 28, 1943 to her parents, Archie and Gladys Edwards.

Wendy was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Gomez, her sons, Nicolas Gomez and Paul Darryn Gomez, her grandson, Antonio Lee Gomez, her parents, Archie and Gladys Edwards and her sisters, Margaret Jones, and Elizabeth Edwards.

Wendy was survived by her son, Lee Tony Gomez and wife, Theresa Ann Gomez, grandsons, Shane Edward Rowden and Cleon Nicholas Gomez, and granddaughter, Leanne Renee’ Gomez, and several nieces and nephews, and other extended family in the States and in England.

In 1962, Wendy met Antonio Gomez, an airman who was stationed at Lakenheath Air Force Base. They married on August 1, 1964. In 1965, they began adding to their family. They had three sons, Lee, Nicolas, and Paul. When Antonio was re-assigned to the States, she said goodbye to her family and they moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico. Sadly, their happy family was torn apart when they

were involved in a car accident in November of 1969. She lost her husband and four-year old son, Nicolas, in that accident. The accident almost took her life and the life of her oldest son, Lee.

Thankfully, they both survived. She took her two sons and settled in Lompoc, California to be closer to her husband’s family. Two years after the accident, it was discovered that she had uterine cancer. She returned to England for medical treatment. She remained in England after that. It was home and where she would raise her two sons.

While in England, her sons took horse riding lessons. She herself became very interested in horses. We do not know if she had experience with horses at a younger age or not. She was either reintroduced to horses or introduced to horses at this time. It turned out she had quite the knack for training horses and teaching others to ride. She did this for many years, until they returned to the States.

In 1981, Wendy returned to the United States (she had one of her beloved horses shipped back with her). She lived in New Jersey for a while but ultimately found her way to Texas. She settled in the Seguin area around Lake McQueeney with her boys. She eventually left Seguin and landed in Universal City where she purchased a home and lived for many years.

Wendy made her living in the States as a legal secretary. Her specialty was bankruptcy law and she knew it as well as any lawyer who was board certified in bankruptcy law. She moved on to be a medical transcriptionist working from home before she accepted a position at the San Antonio Kidney Dialysis Center where she worked until she retired.

In 2005. Wendy took up residence with her son, Lee, and his family in Converse. After this, she shared a home with her dear friend, Joy, in Universal City, before moving into Esplanade Gardens in Converse eight years ago.

Wendy suffered tragic losses in her life. She lost her parents, both sisters, her husband, her two youngest sons and one of her grandsons. After the death of her youngest child, in 2004, she suffered numerous mini strokes that affected her speech. She struggled to communicate verbally for 17 years.

Before the strokes, Wendy liked to ride horses, read, knit, play golf, bowl, hike, and above all, go to the Spurs basketball games. If she wasn’t at the game, she was watching it on TV, screaming and cheering as if she were at the game. After she had the strokes, she was unable to do most of those hobbies, but she never lost her love of watching the Spurs.

Despite all the tragedy Wendy has suffered, she always found great happiness from those around her, especially her grandchildren.

Wendy had an exceptional love for animals. She loved them all. She had many pets throughout her life, her horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds. Her last pet who shared the room with her at Esplanade Gardens, was a cat named Sophie. May they rest in peace together.

Wendy was raised by her parents in the Church of England but did not continue in the Church as an adult. In 2006, Wendy was baptized with her son, Lee, into the Seventh-day Adventist Church and has been a faithful member of the Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church in Converse, Texas since that time.

Throughout her life Wendy longed for peace. A pastor came to her home for a visit. During this visit, he told her that one day, when Jesus returned, an angel would place her son that she lost so many years ago, into her arms. Not only did she now have faith in Jesus, but through the pastor, he provided her the peace she so needed.

Wendy had health conditions, and knew that she did not have a lot of time left on this earth and went around to her friends in the facility telling them, “goodbye,” as she touched her heart and pointed towards the sky. She was ready for this. She was tired.

A Visitation will be held at the Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at the Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church (6630 FM 1516 Converse, Texas 78109) on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. The Burial will follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
